Three Swedish Films Selected for Toronto

Three Swedish films step into the spotlight as the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) kicks off tomorrow, September 4. Two world premieres and one North American premiere mark a strong international presence for Swedish cinema at one of the world’s most influential festivals. In addition, five Swedish co-productions with funding from the Swedish Film Institute are included in the festival program.

Eagles of the Republic

Eagles of the Republic by Tarik Saleh has been selected for the Centrepiece section. Recently announced as Sweden’s official Oscar submission, the film competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Later this autumn, Eagles of the Republic will open the Stockholm International Film Festival. The film has received production support from former feature film commissioner Anders Nylander at the Swedish Film Institute. Swedish producers are Linus Stöhr Torell, Unlimited Stories, Linda Mutawi, Johan Lindström, Apparaten, and Alexandre Mallet-Guy, Memento Production.

Egghead Republic

Egghead Republic by Pella Kågerman and Hugo Lilja has been selected for the Discovery section and will have its world premiere at the festival. The film received production support from former film commissioner Hanna Sohlberg at the Swedish Film Institute. Egghead Republic is produced by Nina Lund and Pella Kågerman, You Saved Me AB.

Earworm

Patrik Eklund’s short film Earworm will have its world premiere in the Short Cuts section at the festival. The film received production support from short film commissioner Axel Petersén at the Swedish Film Institute. Earworm is produced by Mathias Fjellström and Ola Rutz, Salmonfox.

The following co-productions, all supported by the Swedish Film Institute, have been invited to the festival:

Forastera by Lucía Aleñar Iglesias
Swedish co-producers: Marta Reguera and Olivier Guerpillon, Fox in the Snow and Film i Väst.

The Love that Remains by Hlynur Pálmason
Swedish co-producers: Nima Yousefi, Hobab and Film i Väst.

Sentimental Value by Joachim Trier
Swedish co-producers: Lizette Jonjic, Zentropa Sweden and Film i Väst.

The Last Viking by Anders Thomas Jensen
Swedish co-producers: Lizette Jonjic, Zentropa Sweden and Film i Väst.

A Poet by Simón Mesa Soto
Swedish co-producers: David Herdies and Michael Krotkiewski, Momento Film and Film i Väst.

Swedish director Jonatan Etzler, who won a Student Academy Award in gold a few years ago, has directed the British film Bad Apple, based on a novel by Rasmus Lindgren. The film will have its world premiere in Toronto.
