GULLSPIRA – for extraordinary contributions in films for children
Johan Hagelbäck, director, animator and screenwriter
The 2021 Gullspira Award is presented to a versatile filmmaker who has always worked for art to be free. Among meatballs and sour milk, this year's winner has created an innumerable amount of equally loving and anarchist films - always from the perspective of a child. This year's recipient of the Gullspira Award is Johan Hagelbäck.
THE AWARD OF HONOUR (HEDERSGULDBAGGEN)
Suzanne Osten, director and screenwriter
This year's recipient of the Award of Honour is a pioneer in the performing arts, a playful screenwriter and a groundbreaking film director. Our winner has, with curiosity and creative joy, and with humor and darkness, explored topics such as mental illness, exclusion and xenophobia. With a very own cinematic language, she has also taken on issues such as class, family relations and gender equality. For her bold and innovative efforts in Swedish film, this year's Award of Honour is awarded to Suzanne Osten.
Awarded annually since 1964, the Guldbagge ("Golden Beetle") is the name of the Swedish Film Institute's award for achievements during the previous year. The award itself, in the form of a fantastical beetle, was designed by the artist Karl Axel Pehrson.
The Swedish Film Institute is a collective voice for film in Sweden, and a meeting-place for experiences and insights that elevate film on all levels. We preserve and make available Sweden’s film heritage, work to educate children and young people in film and moving images, support the production, distribution and screening of valuable film, and represent Swedish film internationally. A broad diversity of narratives establishes discussions and insights that strengthen the individual and our democracy. Together, we enable more people to create, experience and be enriched by film.
