Stellan Skarsgård makes Oscar history
This year's Oscar nominations have been revealed, and it is now official that Stellan Skarsgård has earned a historic first nomination for his performance in the co-production Sentimental Value by Joachim Trier. The film received a total of nine nominations, including Best Picture. In addition, double-Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson has been double-nominated for the music in Ryan Coogler's Sinners.
Stellan Skarsgård is nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Gustav Borg, the charismatic director and absent father in Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value. Skarsgård’s nomination is historic, as only one Swedish male actor has been nominated for an Oscar before – Max von Sydow, who received nominations for Best Actor for Pelle the Conqueror (1987) and Best Supporting Actor for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011). Stellan Skarsgård also makes history as the first Best Supporting Actor nominee for a film financed and produced outside of the United States.
Skarsgård has already received several awards for his performance in Sentimental Value, including wins at the Golden Globes and the European Film Awards. At the latter, the film also dominated in other categories, taking home six awards in total, including Best European Film. Sentimental Value is nominated for nine Oscars in eight categories, including Best Picture and Best International Feature Film. The film is co-produced by Lizette Jonjic / Zentropa Sweden and Film i Väst, with support from the Swedish Film Institute's film commissioner Theo Tsappos.
Ludwig Göransson is nominated for both Best Original Score and Best Original Song Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. The Swedish composer is now in contention to win his third and potentially fourth Oscar, having previously won for Coogler's Black Panther (2018) and Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer (2023).
In addition, The Ugly Stepsister by Emilie Blichfeldt was nominated for Best Makeup and Hair. The film is co-produced by Lizette Jonjic / Zentropa Sweden and Film i Väst, with support from the Swedish Film Institute’s former film commissioner, Ami Ekström.
In total, Swedish producer Lizette Jonjic is behind films that have received no fewer than ten Oscar nominations this year.
